AMANI FOCUSED on the highway, the way dust blew in wraiths, snaking over the road and vanishing into the twilight. After a long silence, Omar pushed forward from the backseat. “That’s how they do things, you know. Like, there’s practically no choice. The lajeen.” Refugees. “And the Bedouin. They have nothing, really. They can’t feed all their kids. They can’t even feed themselves. They have to hope the missionaries will care for them.”

The headlights seemed to sway, intensifying as night fell. Her hands felt damp on the wheel. “I kind of can’t believe we’re just going to drive away like this and leave him there.”

“The chance to take him back passed a long time ago,” Gabe said.

“He shouldn’t have been left there in the first place.” Her voice tightened with anger.

“I agree.”

“If Musa arrived at the convent in 1938 . . . Dad, you were, what? About four years old?”

“I don’t remember,” Gabe mumbled. “Yes, four or five.”

“How is this even possible? Someone just left him there? And no one remembered him or even talked about him?”

“Ya’ani, he’s different, cuz,” Omar said. “It’s haram, you know? Shame? Taboo. Those village rednecks. They hide people like that and everyone agrees not to notice.”

Gabe made a soft huff in his throat. “And the village is gone anyways. There’s no one to ask.”

“My dad would’ve been, like, seven,” Omar offered. “Maybe he remembers something? We should ask him. I mean, like, whose kid was he, Amo? Is he a second cousin, or where’d he even come from?”

Gabe shook his head silently.

Amani squinted into the circle of headlights. She watched dust flash over the highway, the sound of wind whirling behind.
